This sculpture is a depiction of The goddess Pele – the Hawaiian Volcano Goddess of Creation and Destruction. She’s part of the “I Can Soar” Series which celebrates the “bad-ass” goddess among us.
She’s larger-than-life at 8ft tall. The sculpture is both abstract and figurative. The rhythmic slats of marine mahogany reflect the rhythm of the movement as well as the musculature of the body.
Like much of my work, she’s an homage to the strength and resilience of women. The wood will age gracefully – just as do women. The wood will develop a rich gray patina. She’ll be stable in the landscape for decades.
