This contemporary outdoor sculpture celebrates the magnificence of women and of their limitless reach.  It’s part of the series “I Can Soar”.  All the pieces in the series are named after bad-ass goddesses.  Sol was the Norse goddess of the Sun. 

The work is constructed of slatted “self-weathering” steel. The Corten steel will form a natural orange/brown patina and then stop rusting protecting the steel from further rust for a lifetime.   In the video you see pieces that have reached about half of their rusted patina.  It will take about 9 months outdoors to reach the full patina.

The work started as a 24” tall hand-sculpted wax model.  The model was digitized and then manipulated digitally.  The work is minimal – part of the challenge was to determine the minimum number of pieces needed to achieve the feel of the model and to retain structural integrity.

The small base and tall nature of this piece means it will require bolting to a concrete or timber plinth. It should not be left unbolted. If you cannot bolt it for a day or three, you can use a weight on the front to prevent it from being blown over in a strong wind. I used a 50lb bag of plaster during installation in my sculpture garden over a long weekend before I could borrow the hammer drill to bolt it down.
